The rewards of involvement

Got a few minutes to spare, thought I'd try out Blogger's email posting feature. This one is written on my phone, and if you're reading this, successfully sent through the ether.

As mentioned before, I discovered and got interested in triathlons by chance. While recovering from a motorcycling injury, Lee and Vicky introduced me to Steve's Light & Easy group on one Thursday night Putrajaya ride. The rest, as they say, is history!

Being Friday, ahead of another lung lashing weekend, I'm looking back with nostalgia, and pride, that our small tri community here have been very supportive of weaklings like me, workaholic by day, couch potato by night. Until I decided to change that.

Because of people like Steve, Doc Hisham, Azmar, Edwin, Vicky, Arif, Senn, Bacin, Yusran, John, EiLeen, Shiraz, Mac and many more who deserve mention, I get up at 5am on days to either run 10 clicks or bike 30. Then there's the send kid to school rush, and work, etc. On some days with overdrive, out again in the evening to swim or sweat doing something.

If one were to summarize the benefits I have reaped from this tri activity, it could look like this.

1. Much, much better health, with lowered bad cholesterol (triglycerides, or however its spelt), sugar level and uric acid. Less illnesses. Lower weight (though never enough). Great appetite and water intake daily!

2. More focused mind at work and other activities outside of exercise. Problem solving under any circumstance become easy when you have felt the pain and endure a much higher threshold in training and races.

3. Good role model for my 10 year old daughter and her buds. In fact, we go swimming, cycling and light jogs together on some evenings. Got them into a kids tri some months back, training for the next one in November.

4. Made and continue to meet great friends along the way. Money can't buy stronger legs and lungs, it has to be acquired. Folks here, while in it for a variety of their personal reasons, with differing goals, are genuine and treat each other with deep warmth and humility. Our world of rides and runs are indeed a better place. When someone finds a way to chat while swimming, the water too will be a new frontier.

5. More insight into nutrition and food values. Definitely not a bad thing!

6. During races and rides, we not only get to places we'd not usually go. Also, with the likes of Yusran and Chief, discover the best places to eat the local cuisine and specialities.

I've definitely taken a lot from this sport. Hope to give some back as we go along.

Personalisation Tips

TIP 1:

There are very few things in life more satisfying than to have a domain name to call your own (xxxxx.com/.net/.org). Some that inspired me are:

divemenuts.com (as opposed to Drive Me Nuts!)
ironstruck.com (struck by the Ironman bug)
ravenrace.com (read Rave and Race)

One fine day, I'll do something with these. If you have a proposal, email me please, ishsal(at)trimates.org

These are in addition to the personal ishsal.com, ishak.com and puterialisa.com.

So, all you triathletes out there with your own blogs, figure out what's you, and check that domain availability on http://who.is , immediately :)

If you're already on Blogger.com, its even easier. Log in, go to this page shown in the screencapture below to check whats available, and buy. (click on the images below to enlarge, please)

TIP 2:

Most blogging platforms allow you to domain map your personal domains to theirs. Example, instead of using trimates.blogspot.com, I prefer to use www.trimates.org as my blog address. Just a tad cooler! You can too.

On Blogger, after you have purchased your domain as above, go to the page below, voila!!!

TIP 3:

If you already own a domain hosted by some ISP/registrar somewhere, the view of your host entries/records should read something like this in order for the www to point to your Blogger site.

ADVANCED TIP :)

Always save the best for last. A domain name is useful for a few things. To have your own website or blog. And that all important cool factor, your personalised email. Yes, you can havewhatevernameyouwant(at)thedomainyouown.com ... and start giving your mates one to call their own too.

Its no longer difficult nor costly to do so today. Buying a domain costs US$10 via Google (powered by eNom and GoDaddy!). Hosting it there with an exact Gmail usability (and storage of 6.9GB!) is .... FREE!!! Plus, Google Apps gives so much more, e.g. calendaring, docs, etc.

There's never been a better time to carve out your digital home on the Net. Go to Google Apps and set yourself up for the ultimate cool factor. Welcome to the 21st Century!

Famous last words, if anyone of you would like anemailofyourown(at)trimates.org, just email your preferred ID to ishsal(at)trimates.org and I'll set it up for your use. Absolutely no cost :)

A Definitive Day

Lots have transpired in my life lately. Challenges, ups and downs. Today is special, and I'm super stoked!

Thus, figured I'd do something I've never done before, start one on Blogger!

Trimates? While it may sound like a site your mom wouldn't approve, think Triathlon Mateys!

Being the social triathlete that I decided to be in 2007, and then threw myself into the deep end by attempting Ironman Malaysia in February 2008, I registered trimates.org and ironstruck.com recently. Will probably get around to doing something with them someday.

Mean time, this will be the home of my excursions to be shared.
